Company's Dinner & Dance is drawing near - it's on first Saturday of September. Currently, we are involved in consolidating the registrations. One marked difference vis-a-vis the previous workplace is that there are more incomplete tables. Consolidating the registrations can be a tricky thing to do, in deciding who to re-arrange, which incomplete tables to combine as one etc.
For me, it was a learning experience as I got a glimpse of how my colleague, E, also the organizing chairman, thought through things. The basis of working on tables of the smallest size to start with, definitely gave a more logical rationale when having to explain to employees. Initially, I had the pre-conceived idea that combining tables to form 10 at a table was the way to go. But the realization was that there is a greater need to look at the bigger picture and maximize complete tables as much as possible. Also, my pre-conceived idea wasn't as much a solid reasoning, in the event of having to explain to employees.
There were 2 employees who insisted on having their combinations. On the one hand, was glad that managed to stay cool in dealing with the supervisor. With strength in numbers, E, R & I managed to get the supervisor to look at things from our perspective, as much as we tried to bear his in mind. For the 2nd employee, I had to try very hard not to get loud and put across the same message to her.
A little disappointing thing was that there was this colleague from another department who came excitedly to add in one more pax to her table. Upon learning that her table was reconfigured, she kinda lost her cool a little and talked about not wanting to go for the D&D already. I need to talk to her again after today to explain to her the committee's perspective in doing so. Hopefully, she will have a better appreciation!
There are many challenges that come with being part of the organizing committee. There are even greater challenges in the workplace since some employees can be rather persistent and go on the aggressive, conflict mode as my colleague mentioned. Still, it will be good to be able to get them to see things differently :)
